This Memorial Day I would like to salute Sgt Leroy A. Petry, Medal of Honor Winner. Traditionally on Memorial Day, I highlight either a fallen USAF Academy grad, or a fellow flyer. This year, I want to highlight someone who was not required “to give that last full measure of devotion”. However, he almost did.
Sgt. Leroy A. Petry is a former US Army Ranger. On May 26, 2008 for acts of tremendous gallantry, Sgt. Petry earned the Medal of Honor. You can learn his story on this podcast or this American Legion video.
Meeting Leroy A. Petry
My wife and I were fortunate enough to have the company of Sgt. Petry at the Tri-State Warbird Museum Gala in June of 2015. Thanks to our friend and host, Howard Becker, we were privileged to hear him tell his story, ever so humbly I might add. Afterwards, we had the honor of meeting him, taking the photo below and I had the privilege of shaking his bionic/robotic hand. The hand that earned the Medal of Honor.
We in America, are fortuante to have a long history of soldiers who were unbelievably brave while securing and maintaining our freedom and the freedom of those overseas. We have been blessed by God.
I want to thank PBS for highlighting Sgt. Leroy A. Petry during their Memorial Day Concert on the Washington Mall. It was a fitting tribute. Thank you Sgt. Petry for your sacrifice.
Thanks for sharing, Daryl
